LIVING WITH PKD

My experiences with PKD did not begin until I was 18 years old. Prior to that my life was very normal. My family and I were close. We spent many wonderful summers together, either on cross-country camping trips, attending theater festivals, or visiting with cousins.

In my years working with David when he was the Chairperson of the Melrose Energy Commission I've known him to be serious-minded, a hard worker and strongly committed to protecting the environment and improving our community. He is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in and is often a few steps ahead of the rest of us. In spite of his health challenges, he continues to be active in civic affairs and is a great asset to our community.

David Shakespeare is the epitome of an engaged citizen who cares deeply about the community and gives of himself to improve the quality of life for all citizens. Faced with the realities of his own medical condition, David thought first of his community and was instrumental in passing a local ordinance allowing municipal employees to take additional leave, if they needed it, after donating an organ.

David was also one of the founders of the Melrose Energy Commission, which is one of the leading volunteer based environmental and energy conservation committees in Massachusetts. He has given hundreds of hours of his time and expertise to save this city hundreds of thousands of dollars, and his efforts have culminated in major infrastructure renovations to our schools and city buildings to save energy and preserve the environment.

David's style is compassionate and informed, and he is a consensus builder. It is my most fervent hope that people know of David's medical struggles, which have affected him and his family, and that we can help him promote organ donation and find a potential match.

I and the citizens of Melrose stand with David, who has been a leader in this community in so many ways to help him find a donor and promote organ donation.
