LIVING WITH PKD

My experiences with PKD did not begin until I was 18 years old. Prior to that my life was very normal. My family and I were close. We spent many wonderful summers together, either on cross-country camping trips, attending theater festivals, or visiting with cousins.

Read Story

I’d like you to meet my wonderful husband David Shakespeare — outdoorsman, environmental analyst, community advocate, as well as a loving friend and family man. We live outside Boston in Melrose, Mass., with our two cats, Cosmo and Lily. At age 54, he’s not only working on renewable energy projects, he’s also fighting a potentially life threatening battle with PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease).

This incurable genetic disease, which affects 600,000 people in the United States, has hit David’s family hard. Both his mother and brother died from PKD. Today David has less than 20 percent kidney function. He needs a new kidney urgently or he’ll have to start dialysis, a process that compromises any future transplant and can shorten his lifespan.

David’s brother, John, and I have both offered to be donors, but were disqualified due to medical reasons.

Therefore, we are making a special appeal: Would you or someone you know consider becoming a living kidney donor?

If you cannot be a donor, would you help us with fundraising or outreach? The larger the network we create, the greater the chance of finding that caring person who will make the difference for David – the difference of a longer, healthier life.

Will you join our effort? Please read his story and learn how you might help.
